English: War Medal 1939-45, WW2 Awarded to Major Francis Albert Aldridge, DSO (1907-1976) cupronickel circular medal, 36mm diameter, plain straight non-swivelling suspender, with ribbon obverse- crowned head of King George VI, surrounded by the legend ‘GEORGIUS VI D- G- BR- OM- REX ET INDIAE- IMP-’ Reverse- A lion standing on a dragon with two heads, above are the dates 1939 and 1945 Ribbon- 32mm wide grosgrain ribbon, colours of red, blue and white, repeated in reverse and separated by a thin red band

Notes War Medal 1939-45, WW2 Major Francis Albert Aldridge Major Francis Albert Aldridge DSO (1907-1976) Military Service- pre-war- Territorials WW2- 14th Light Anti-aircraft Regiment in Africa and Italy Awards- DSO Official Citation for DSO- "Major Aldridge joined the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force on the 29th August, 1940, with the 14th New Zealand Anti-aircraft Regiment, and sailed as officer-in-charge of the 5th Artillery Reinforcements. "As Battery Captain of the 43rd Battery, which was under command of the 6th Brigade, he served throughout the Second Libyan Campaign in the gallant actions of Sidi Rezegh and Bel Hamed. Later Major Aldridge was appointed Battery Commander of the 42nd Battery and filled this position with great distinction until the end of the Tunisian Campaign in April, 1942, his Battery being credited with over a dozen planes shot down. "Again, in the Alamein offensive and the actions at Tripolitania and Tunisia, Major Aldridge's Battery gained further successes in the destruction of enemy planes and displayed efficiency and a high morale which reflected his own unassuming yet cheerful efficiency. "Major Aldridge also served with distinction in the Italian Campaign. In action, he was always cool and assiduous to duty."
