English: British War Medal, WW1 Medal awarded to 24-1310 Pte George Burton Escott Russell, New Zealand Rifle Brigade silver medal; 36mm diameter; straight non-swivelling suspender, with ribbon obverse- head of King George V with the legend ‘GEORGIUS V BRITT- OMN- REX ET IND- IMP-’ reverse- Naked figure of St. George on horseback facing right. The horse is trampling on an eagle shield and cross bones Around the edge are the dates, ‘1914’ and ‘1918’ named on rim- 24-1310 L-CPL. G.B.E.RUSSELL. N.Z.E.F. ribbon- grosgrain ribbon, 32mm wide, orange band in centre, bordered with white, black and blue stripes. Mounted on block of wood with 1914-15 Star and Victory Medal

Notes British War Medal, WW1 Medal awarded to 24-1310 George Burton Escott Russell, New Zealand Rifle Brigade George Burton Escott Russell, born 1893 and educated at Auckland Grammar School and Wellington College, was the brother of Doris Porter who was the mother of Kenneth Russell Porter. He was killed in action on the Somme on 15th September 1916, aged 23 years.
