Notes NZ Memorial Cross Flt. Off. Ian Alan Charles Grant, RAF Presented to the family of NZ391351 Flying Officer Ian Allan Charles Grant, killed in action 13 February 1943 During WW2 Ian Grant served with the RNZAF and RAF, service no NZ391351, He was flying with 485 (NZ) Squadron, Fighter Command at the time of his death. "Flying Officer Grant was pilot of a fighter type aircraft, reported missing over enemy territory at approximately 1 pm on the 13th February 1943." The son of William Edward and Gertrude Isabella Grant of Mission Bay Auckland, Flying Officer Ian Grant was killed while serving with 485 (NZ) Squadron, Fighter Command. His aircraft, a Spitfire VB, number BM482-W, took off at 1140hrs on on Operation Rodeo 168 which involved a sweep over northern France. He was one of three which failed to return. On diving into fifteen enemy fighters. climbing up from 6000 feet over the Hardelot area at 1215hrs, the Squadron was in turn bounced by a larger formation coming out of the sun. In the fierce fighting which followed 485's commanding officer Squadron Leader R.J.C. Grant, RNZAF, tried in vain to warn his brother over the r-t of an attacker coming at him from behind. Immediately after BM482 was shot down the Squadron Leader exacted revenge by destroying the enemy fighter. At the time of death Ian Grant, aged 28 years, had flown 875hrs and was on his 22nd operation His death is commemorated at the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey, United Kingdom (Panel 197). Ian Grant's brother Joseph Reginald Cowan Grant died on the 28 February 1944 while flying with 65 Squadron (RAF) as Officer Commanding 122 Airfield HQ. Their elder brother, William Edward Grant, died of illness on the 2 February 1932 while serving in the pre-war RAF.
