Notes NZ Memorial Cross Wing Cdr Reginald Joseph Cowan Grant, RAF Presented to the family of Wing Commander Reginald Joseph Cowan Grant, killed in action 28 February 1944 Grant, Reginald Joseph C (W. Cdr) 1914-1944. RNZAF RAF. Served- WW2- England, Europe; was CO No 485 (NZ) Sq. DFC and bar DFM. He was killed on 28.2.1944 while setting off on a mission across the Channel. It is recorded that , shortly after take off, Grant's engine cut out in cloud. He ordered the wing to carry on while he turned back in an effort to make base. He broke cloud at about 1000 feet and it is surmised that oil covered his hood and goggles, for he used his parachute which opened just as he struck the ground.
