Notes Military Medal awarded to Private WH Deakin 'For Bravery in the Field'. In 1943, during the invasion of Sicily by 50th (Northumbrian) Division, Pte Deakin crawled down a hill to fetch three dozen grenades, then worked forward under fire to grenade an enemy Spandau near Catania. Corporal William Henry Deakin MM, born in Leigh, UK, served with the Durham Light Infantry (service no 3529549) during WW2, taking part in Dunkirk, the Liberation of Geel (Belgium), and was a POW on crematorium duties at Auschwitz and Helle. After the war he settled in New Zealand and volunteered for service in Korea with K-Force. He died in 1999.
