Notes British Army Temperance Association medal In 1862 the British Army in India organised the “Soldiers’ Total Abstinence Association”. Men were encouraged to sign a pledge to abstain entirely from alcohol. Field Marshal Lord Roberts subsequently founded the Army Temperance Association, initially in India (circa 1880) and in 1893 for soldiers serving in Britain and in Colonies outside of India.A similar organisations was formed for the Royal Navy in 1868.
