| Notes | Order of the Indian Empire, Companion (CIE) badge (1927) Order conferred upon Sir Joseph Smith in 1927. The Order of the Indian Empire was established in 1878 by Queen Victoria. It was awarded in three classes- Knight Grand Commander, Knight Commander and Companion. London Gazette (supplement), 3 June 1927, p3607 “To be Companions of the said Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire … Joseph Benjamin George Smith, Esq., Officiating Chief Engineer, Public Works Department, Irrigation Branch, Punjab.” Joseph Benjamin George Smith (1978-1950) Born in Bengal and trained at the Thonason Civil Engineering College, Roorkee, Joseph Smith joined the Irrigation Section of the Public Works Department in the Punjab in 1898, and took up the position of Chief Engineer in 1926. In that role he had charge of irrigation schemes covering millions of acres. He was also an official member of the Punjab Legislative Council since 1927 and that year was made a Companion of the Indian Empire. When he was knighted, in 1932, he was on furlough in New Zealand, living with his family in Epsom, pending his retirement. The investiture took place in Wellington in October 1933.
