Description |
English: A lead fragment of an object which is likely to be related to 18th century commorative medals, see SWYOR-2ECA62, possibly associated with Admiral Vernon. The fragment consists of the lower third of a circular flat disc with a shaft projecting from the centre of the lower edge of this. The disc fragment measures 33mm in surviving width and c20mm in height. On one face, presumably the front face, there is the moulded torso of a man with one arm bent holding a sword at the ready, it appears to be a man in the mist of a sword fight. The other, probably back face, decpicts moulded rows of tiny sailing ships, two rows and seven ships can be seen. Each ship is viewed in profile with two sails. The projecting shaft has an oval cross-section and measures c13mm in length, 9mm in width and 7mm in thickness. There appears to be corroded iron in and around it. The function of this shaft is uncertain and no parallel could be found for this object. |
