Title |
Medieval: Possible Pilgrim's ampulla |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete cast lead or lead alloy possible Pilgrim's Ampulla, of probable Medieval dating (12th to 16th Centuries AD).
The possible ampulla is sub ellipitical in plan. The front exhibits a trapezoidal slot cut out of the top. Both sides are plain and undecorated. It is a light to mid grey colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the ploughsoil, has resulted in some minor damage (curling of the edges and score marks) of the ampulla. It measures 32.52mm in length, 26.82mm wide and 5.2mm thick. It weighs 17.4 grams. Along with pilgrim badges and tokens, ampullas were a typical pilgrim 'souvenir' during the Medieval period. They consisted of small lead flasks, sealed with a stopper and contained holy water from the relevant pilgrimage centre that had been visited. Designs were normally placed on the front and back, indicating which shrine had been visited. Another similar ampulla has been recorded as WMID-3EEF72, although neither of these two display the normal characteristics associated with Medieval ampulla forms. |
