Title |
Medieval Annular coin brooch |
||
Description |
English: A silver annular brooch made from a short cross penny of John or Henry III.
The brooch is circular in plan and has the legend of the coin still visible. The centre of the coin has been removed. There is a circular perforation which holds the pin of the brooch. The pin itself has a loop for attachment to the brooch and a collar before the tapering pin. The legend on the front of the brooch, which is in fact the reverse of the coin, reads PIERE...DVR and refers to the moneyer Pieres who struck coins in Durham from c. AD 1199 to c. AD 1222. The initial mark is a cross pattée. The legend on the back of the brooch is much more worn although some letters are visible and read ...VS R E. Due to the wear on the coin it is difficult to suggest a specific class for the coin although it dates to either the reign of John or early in the reign of Henry III. The brooch is very small and would not have been able to support any great weight and therefore it seems unlikely that it would have been functional. The object may have been a show piece or a trial piece for a craftsman. |
