Title
Medieval Seal Matrix
Description
English: A cast copper alloy Seal Matrix, dating to between AD 1250 and AD 1350.
In plan, the seal matrix is of a pointed oval (mandorla/vesica) shape. The reverse has an integral raised rib running centrally down the rear which also forms a suspension loop at the top. The suspension loop contains a rusted iron fragment, which robably once provided the means for attachment or suspension of the object. The front surface is worn and corroded, and bears a depiction of a human figure which appears to be sitting, possibly with a child. There is a legend in Lombardic script around the edge which is partially illegible, it appears to read: [S'..]ERDE[..] SE[.]ERELLA.

A similar seal is published by Read (2001), p80, fig 51, item 613.

Length: 25.72mm. Width: 17.64mm. Thickness: 3.89mm. Weight: 5.41g.

Depicted place (County of findspot) Gloucestershire
