Title
Medieval Soldino
Description
English: A medieval silver Venetian soldino of Doge Michele Steno, dating to the period AD 1400-1413. Obverse depicting the Doge kneeling left holding banner, with a star above what appears to be a S on the right hand side. The reverse depicts the winged and nimbate Lion of St Mark facing forward within a circle, holding book of gospels. Mint of Venice.

The silver soldino of Venice was known as the galyhalpens (galley-halfpence) as it was brought by the annual Venetian trading fleets which visited southern ports such as Southampton in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries
AD. The soldino was about the size of English halfpennies and was popular because of a contemporary lack of small change.
