Title
Medieval ampulla: Pilgrim's ampulla
Description
English: A complete cast lead-alloy medieval pilgrim's ampulla. The ampulla is flask-shaped and retains the two suspension lugs either side of the neck. The ampulla is decorated on the flat face of the lower chamber. This decoration is a heart filled with cross hatching and a stalk protruding from the top. The opposing side, which is rounded, is undecorated.

The heart motif has been found on ampullae in Salisbury (Spencer 1990:91 no 186), in London, Maltby Springs, Lincs. and Brandon in Suffolk (ibid., 60; no 132), and in many other locations besides. It is thought perhaps to relate to Bromholm Priory, Norfolk, however most of the examples in available literature have decoration on both sides of the flask, often the hatched heart and a four or eight petalled flower on the oppsing side. Ampulla were created to hold holy water and were common souvenir from pilgrimage sites across the county. They first appeared in the later 12th century and continued to be made until the beginnings of the dissolution in AD 1538. This example is likely to date from c. AD 1350-1538.
