Title
Medieval ampulla.
Description
English:

An incomplete cast lead or lead alloy ampulla. In plan it is semi-circular as only the lower portion of the ampulla remains. There is a design on both faces, but the details are not clear. One face is missing a portion, and this does not appear to have occurred recently, and likewise with the damaged upper edge. The surface of the ampulla has developed a mottled light grey/cream coloured patina. Its length from the upper edge to the apex of the base is 27.66mm, the maximum width across the lower portion is 33.04mm, and the thickness of the base of the ampulla is 9.41mm. It weighs 27.9g.

Ampullae were used as a flask to hold holy water, becoming a souvenir of a pilgrimage; they generally date to the late 12th to 15th centuries (Spencer, B. 1990, Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges, Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum p, 57 ff).
