Title |
Medieval ampulla |
||
Description |
English: A lead alloy ampulla dating from the Medieval period. The object is jug-shaped (rectangular with convex sides) but there are no attachment loops at the neck. It is 40.7mm long, 28.5mm wide and 9.1mm thick. One face of the object is decorated with incised vertical lines round the base. There are faint horizontal lines on the other face. The ampulla is flattened. A similar example on the database is YORYM-D48CC3. Ampullae were used as a flask to hold holy water, becoming a souvenir of a pilgrimage; they date to the late 12th to 15th centuries (Spencer, B. 1990, Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges, Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum p, 57 ff). The origin of this ampulla is not known. |
