Title
Medieval ampulla
Description
English: A complete lead alloy medieval ampulla dating from about AD 1300-1500. The ampulla is flask-shaped and damaged on one side and at the neck. Both loops are present but distorted. One face of the body is obscured. The other side has a crescent filled with a raised lattice pattern. This style of ampulla usually dates from the 14th to early 16thcenturies (Spencer 1990:57-62).

Ampullae were designed to contain a draught of relic water, to be taken as cures or worn by suspension through the loops as a talisman (Spencer, 1998: 203). Spencer (ibid: 3) suggests that ampulla were popular in England from the second half of the 12th century until the early 14th century, when they were largely replaced by badges as the most popular type of pilgrimage momento.
