Title |
Medieval ampulla (plan and reverse). |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a cast lead alloy ampulla. The fragment which remains is the side portion of the ampulla. The lower portion of the edge forms a sub-C shape and the upper portion is vertical. Where the two portions of the side edge meet there are incomplete stubs, which originally would have been an integral loop. The interior edge is a broken or torn edge. The exterior edge is a horizontal ‘U’ shape in profile. The surface of the ampulla has patches of a light grey/cream coloured patina. The length of the ampulla is 42.96mm, the width across the lower portion is 19.37mm, and it is 8.82mm thick. It weighs 13.06g.
Ampullae were used as a flask to hold holy water, becoming a souvenir of a pilgrimage; they date to the late 12th to 15th centuries (Spencer, B. 1990, Pilgrim Souvenirs and Secular Badges, Salisbury and South Wiltshire Museum p, 57 ff). |
