Title
Medieval axehead
Description
English: An Early Medieval - Medieval iron axe head (10th – 12th century). This is a heavy-duty woodsman’s axe. The cross-section is asymmetrical showing that it could have been used for trimming timbers and the socket has a flat top that would allow use as a hammer (Ottaway & Rogers 2002:2724-2725). The upper surface of the axe is flat and the lower surface is curved as the blade expands from 36.26mm to 105.81mm. The socket is triangular in profile and has two rounded projections, one on each side of the lower edge to provide extra grip between the axe head and the handle. The iron is flaking.

A similar but smaller axehead, no. 13020, was excavated in York in a context that dated 15th – early 16th century, however it is believed that the axe head was residual as it is so similar to 10th – 12th century examples (ibid.).

Dimensions: length: 200.19mm; width: 105.81mm; thickness: 35.42mm; weight: >600g.
