Title
Medieval buckle
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy buckle of medieval to post medieval date, c. AD 1350-1600.

The frame survives but the pin is missing. The buckle frame is sub-circular in plan with a slightly flattened section on one side of the frame between the two loops. It is D-shaped in cross section. The integral strap bar is square in cross section and appears to have a slight tapering or twist in its centre, possibly where the pin was originally attached.

Whitehead (2003:44) states that annular buckles were used in a wide range of applications over a long period time from the 14th to 17th centuries. Margeson (1993:28-9, no.160) illustrates a similar example from a context dated c.1400-1600 AD and Egan and Pritchard (1991) illustrate a similar buckle that is suggested as being late medieval in date (65-66, no 214).

Measurements: 30.1mm length, 30.5mm width, 4.1mm thickness, weight 7.0g.
