Title
Medieval cast copper alloy single looped buckle frame with integral forked spacers
Description
English: A single looped oval buckle with integral forked spacer, cast in copper alloy. The buckle frame has a triangle pin rest. The complete pin survives and is 17.0mm long and around 3.1mm wide. It is made of sheet wrapped around the strap bar and sits in-between the forks of the spacer. Both prongs remain, but one is broken; the complete prong is 18.7mm long. The tapering prongs of the forked spacer have a step cut into the copper alloy. This stepping occurs on the inner edges of the fork. The front of the oval buckle has a chamfered edge, but the fork and the reverse of the oval buckle are flat and have squared edges. The buckle is a dark brownish-green colour, with a corroded surface. The pin has a light green patina. It is 31.9mm in length, 19.4mm wide and 3.4mm at the thickest point. It weighs 2.77 grams. A similar buckle is illustrated in Egan and Pritchard, 1991, p. 81, Fig: 49, number 326, dated to the late 14th century.
