Title
Medieval copper alloy strap-end
Description
English: Medieval copper alloy strap-end, probably of later 13th to mid 15th century date
The strap-end is of sheet metal with a separate forked spacer type and is incomplete, missing one of the sheet plates (with a length of 59.7mm and a weight of 7.7g). The strap-end is widest and thickest near the attachment end (where it has a width of 18.4mm and a thickness of 4.12mm). The sides are straight and converge slightly towards the outside edge (with a width of 16.7mm and a thickness of 3.2mm). The outside edge is concave and is decorated with an open aperture (4.5mm diameter) cutting the edge. The strap-end was secured by two rivets positioned either side of the aperture (1.2mm and 1.5mm diameter). The only applied decoration discernible on the plate is a vertical groove extending from the centre of the aperture in the attachment edge. The copper alloy forked spacer is still adhering to one of the sheet plates (which is 0.9mm thick) and is as long as the plate. The terminal knop on the spacer depicts an acorn (8mm long, 5.5mm wide and 4.0mm thick). The surface of the sheet metal plate and knop has been lost and is golden bronze colour.

The strap end can be closely paralleled with three examples excavated in London (Egan & Pritchard, 1991, p 143, nos. 672-5) from contexts dated from c. 1270 to c. 1450.
