Title |
Medieval dog head vessel spout. |
||
Description |
English: Medieval cast copper alloy vessel spout with zoo-morphic head, probably from a ewer or laver (washing bowl). Curved cylindrical object (curves at obtuse angle when viewed from the side), rectangular in plan, sub-circular section, both ends are open and there is a moulded dog head in the centre. The ears of the dog are represented by a raised oval with vertical groove down the middle. There are eight short incised lines running longitudinally along the centre of the top of the head. Short incised lines represent the eyelashes (seven on the left, six on the right). The eyes are lenticular with a punched triangle as pupil, and the snout is upturned with semi-circular grooves as nostrils. The intergrally cast pouring spout comes out of the dog's mouth. The proximal end of the spout is broken - it would have originally curved downwards, terminating in a point, and would have been soldered to the vessel - the break is smooth, indicating it was broken in antiquity. Fine green brown patina. The bore narrows towards the spout end. Length 57.42mm, width (across ears) 19.58mm, thickness (across brow) 17.44mm, internal diameter of spout (at mouth end) c.6mm, internal diameter of spout (vessel end) c.8mm, weight 51.03g.
A parallel can be seen on a 15th century hanging laver bowl in the British Museum, and Bailey 1997 (Detector Finds 3, p.58) publishes more, dated to the 16th century. |
