Medieval jetton of Gueldres or England
Description
English: Medieval copper alloy jetton issued in the Duchy of Guelders under Mathilde de Gueldre (1371-1379) or English. Design of a lion rampant with two forked tail in shield within tressure of six arches /double stranded bowed cross flueretty with lion rampant in each quarter and fleur de lis in centre. Mitchiner (1988: 252) gives two similar examples with different symbols in the borders, no.790 and 791 which he attributes to Guelders; SUSS-BF0304 and SF-BDB185 on this database appear identical to this example. Barnard (1916:102, plate II) no.43 obverse and 42 reverse also appears identical and he attributes it to the English series.
