Title |
Medieval lace tag (plan and reverse). |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy lace tag made of a sub-rectangular shaped piece of copper alloy sheet. This has been curled forming a circular hollow with an edge to edge seam. The lace tag tapers slightly to a broken asymmetrical edge. There are small areas of openwork which is difficult to tell whether they are due to corrosion or perforation. The surface of the lace tag has a well developed shiny mid grey/green patina. The lace tag measures 53.27mm long, 8.51mm wide and 7.39mm thick. It weighs 5.8g.
Lace tags are also known as lace chapes, pointes, were used on the end of leather or textile laces. Margeson (Margeson, S. 1993 Norwich Households; Medieval and Post Medieval Finds from Norwich Survey Excavations 1971-78. East Anglian Archaeology Report No. 58) illustrates a similar lace tag, No. 123 and dates it to the late 15th century. Egan (Egan and Pritchard 2002 Dress Accessories Boydell Press) illustrates lace tags (Nos. 1440-1441) with perforations and these are dated to the early 13th to 15th century. |
