Title |
Medieval or Post Medieval Chape |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete Medieval or Post Medieval copper alloy sheet chape. The chape is oval in cross section, possibly squashed and formed of a single sheet of copper alloy, over lapping at one side. The attachment end is complete with the point lost to old breaks. There is a seperate circular sectioned copper alloy rivet running across inside the chape. Although it is large for a lace this rivet suggests it was attached to material, leather or wood, it would also be impractical on a dagger chape. There appears to be a known class of large chapes with rivets of this form whose use is currently unclear (Geake 2001:41). It is 17.9mm long, 12.1 by 7.1mm across and weighs 1.19g including the mud contents.
Egan and Pritchard (1991:281-282) found in London the first evidence of lace or strap chapes was from the mid 13th century with riveted examples coming in from the mid-14th century and they continued in use into the Post Medieval period. |
