Title
Medieval papal bulla of Sixtus IV (obverse)
Description
English: Cast lead papal bulla of Pope Sixtus IV (1471-1484). The obverse shows the head of St Peter to the right and the head of St Paul to the left, looking towards each other, surrounded by a beaded border, thought to have represented a halo, and divided by a cross and above the letters PP / AE in two lines for PAul and PEter. And the reverse has the words, in relief, SIXTVS / PAPA / IIII in three lines, surrounded by a ring of pellets.

These seals were named bullae after the Papal documents or 'bulls' that they were attached to, and signified that the document had been issued with the Pope's authority. Lead was seen to be more permanent than wax as it could not be so easily melted down en route.

Bailey (2000) illustrates a similar but earlier example on page 5, Fig.2.
