Title
Medieval pilgrims ampulla
Description
English: Lead pilgrims ampulla, Medieval in date.

It is the typical flask shape. The handles have broken off but it is complete apart from that. The obverse is decorated with a scallop shell design, the pattern is picked out with grooved lines. The reverse appears plain but this could be due to wear as there was decoration on the reverse of this type of object. The scallop is the emblem of pilgrimage as well as being the badge of St. James of Compostela and many shrines took up this motif for their ampulla.

Ampulla came into use in the last quarter of the 12th century and continued until the 15th century.
