Title
Medieval purse bar frame (plan and reverse).
Description
English: A cast copper alloy purse bar fragment. The purse bar has a ‘V’ shaped section and is slightly curved in plan. One exterior face is decorated with linear grooves, forming a double-stranded cross hatching. The reverse face has a small hole to fix the fabric of the purse to the frame. Both terminals of the frame are broken, these are not recent breaks. The surface of the bar has a mid green patina. It measures 54.98mm long and 7.05mm wide. It weighs 9.5g. Margeson (Margeson, S. 1993 Norwich Households: Medieval and Post Medieval Finds From Norwich Survey, Excavations 1971-78. East Anglian Archaeology 58) illustrates a similar example, No. 290 which is dated to c. 1650 to 1700. Other frames are illustrated in the London Museum Catalogue (Ward-Perkins, J.B. 1940 London Museum: Medieval Catalogue London ), and are dated from the late 15th centuries.
