Medieval seal; papal bulla of Pope Urban VI
Description
English: Medieval seal; cast lead papal bulla of Pope Urban VI, dating to 1378-1389. The bulla is large and sub-circular. The obverse reads ‘URB / ANUS / P.P. VI’ within a border of pellets. There are crowns above each letter of the ‘P.P’ and there is a row of tiny figures at the very bottom, possibly representing a court scene. The reverse has the portraits of Saint Paul and Saint Peter within borders of pellets, although Saint Peter is very worn. They are identified above with the letters ‘SPA SP[E]’. The whole has a thick, grey-white patina over its surface. Diameter 38.8mm, thickness 4.7mm, weight 46.69g
