Title
Medieval single loop buckle
Description
English:

An incomplete medieval cast copper alloy single loop 'D' shaped with ornate outer edge buckle, missing its pin. The D-shaped loop is oval in section; all its edges are bevelled.. The outer edge widens and in the centre has a sheet roller made from a different coppper alloy. The roller is notched in the centre to hold the pin, and is decorated with parallel incised lines. The buckle curves round to the pin bar. At each end of the pin bar are squared knops, attaching it to the rest of the frame. The pin bar is narrowed and offset. The buckle frame is plain. The buckle is covered in a dark green patina, with patches of a lighter corrosion. The buckle measures 22.1mm (width) x 19.6mm (length) x 6.6mm (thickness), and weighs 4.75g. Egan and Pritchard (1991, 72-74) date similar examples of buckles with sheet rollers from archaeological contexts to c. 1150 to 1260 AD.
