Title
Medieval zoomorphic annular brooch
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy artefact of Medieval date, AD 1200 - 1500, possibly an annular brooch, though it may also be a buckle or strap fitting. The remaining portion consists of half of a circular or oval frame, of sub-rectangular section, with an integral projection on the outer edge. The projection is in the form of a zoomorphic animal head which bends back on itself to look across the frame. Traces of gilding remain on the frame. The brooch has a dark brown patina. It is 21.8mm long, 26.1mm wide and 9.3mm thick. It weighs 5.1gm.

A number of similar artefacts are recorded on the database. For a more detailed discussion of these items see records SWYOR-1CB26C and SWYOR-620799. This object may be related to disc-on-pin buckles.
