The fermented aguamiel(honey water), as the sap is called,becomes the sweetish-sour foamyliquid known as pulque, and is thensent to the City for the glorious in-ebriation of soldiers and civilians. Ittakes a maguey about ten years toflower, and then, of course, it can beused only once; but they are grown insuch abundance that the production ofpulque is one of Mexicos most thriv-ing industries. The tough fiber of themaguey is woven into coarse cloth,and the fleshy part of the trunkroasted, makes a delicious sweet,much like sugar cane, called mescal.The leaves go to feed the pigs, andpaper is sometimes made from thepulp. It must be remarked that pulqueitself is by no means an unmixed evil.In the cities, where it is adulteratedwith cheap whiskies, it results in muchvice, but in the mountains the people

Themen made the adobes, and our lay-reader, Mr. Andrade, himself wentup into the forest, cut the timbers,and hauled them down the mountain-side.
