r flows upon its two-hundred-mile journeyto the Pacific, near Topic, of Toltec fame, but firstforming the well-known falls of Juanacatlan. Surround-ing this region are great plains of wheat-growing capacities,and indeed this State has been termed the Granary ofMexico. The railway carries us westwardly to Ameca,a picturesque town, and thence the saddle is our meansof conveyance. Far down towards the Pacific coast,and southwardly, one of my journeys took me, overvast stretches of plains and among timber-clad hills :timber-clad, as the devouring wood-burning locomotivehas not yet reached so far, and the stump-studdedlands as along the railway are not encountered. Furtheron are the abrupt precipices of the Pacific slope, andabove them rises the high volcano of Colima with itseverlasting crest of smoke, breaking in leaden spiralsagainst the sky by day, and illuminating the night sceneryof haciendas and palm groves with its fitful flames.Colima is the only active Mexican volcano at present.

This city hasacquired a considerable commercial and industrial im-portance of recent years, largely due to the localcotton-manufacturing industries and general flourishingagricultural resources. The city is not, however, spoiltby the manufacturing element as regards its characterand appearance, and the cleanliness of its streets andgeneral beauty and severity, in their various fields, of itschurch and domestic architecture charm the traveller,and elicit admiration from those who had expected a lessadvanced community.
