Title
Middle Saxon object
Description
English: Unidentified Early Medieval object, flat with figure-of-eight outline (17 x >33mm, ribbon ornament bordering sides and forming interlace motif, inlaid with very degraded enamel in two different colours (pale field, darker ribbon). One end is broken across an outlined perforation that is reflected at the other end by an oval cell containing pale enamel. Sue Youngs comments 'The enamelled piece is not quite like anything I have seen - flatness and thinness and form not like bowl fittings - 'ribbon' ornament and two colours (originally red and yellow - complete guess, or yellow and white possibly - they have decayed differentially anyway) suggest mid 7th to 8th c - but what it is or was I know not -not whether necessarily Irish or Scottish Irish. I have published some varied pieces with ribbon enamel interlace in Cormac Bourke(ed) 1995 From the Isles of the North, 37 - 47.'
