Title
Middle or Late Early Medieval brooch
Description
English: Middle Saxon to Late Saxon cast copper alloy nummular brooch, heavily beaded border within which is a crude and heavily corroded right-facing bust encircled by what appears to be a garbled attempt at an inscription, mainly comprised of 'S's and 'O's. A Roman prototype is most probable but the design is hardly legible and so a more contemporary coin could have furnished the model. The back has traces of the same heavily-beaded border but appears otherwise plain. A squareish loop for the (missing) pin remains together with the stumps of a catchplate. Diameter 25.5mm, weight 5.58g. Probably 9th century.
