Title
Middle or Late Early Medieval buckle
Description
English: Incomplete probably Middle Saxon to Late Saxon copper alloy strap fitting or buckle plate, a D-sectioned bar with two iron rivets, one through an ovoid terminal and the other before a bifurcation. Between the two the convex front is decorated with moulded chevrons that may constitite a stylised animal head. Beyond the bifurcation both incomplete narrow arms are decorated with three slight moulded swellings.

There is some resemblance to buckle plates or strap fittings with zoomorphic decoration from two Norfolk sites, Sedgeford (HER 51077, NMS-3712D7) and Bracon Ash (HER 35891, NMS-28DA87). These are related to a widely distributed group of 9th-century buckles (Geake, H. in Emery 2007, 199, fig. 5.90 SF 102; Rogers 1993, 1348, fig. 650 no. 5314). Length 35.4mm. Width 11mm. Thickness 4.2mm.
