In the female bladder, when it is desirable to keep thebladder empty, the self-retaining catheter is usually em-ployed, which consists of a catheter with a bulb at its vesicalextremity, or an ordinary catheter with silk loops and aT-bandage may be employed in the same manner as insecuring a male catheter. WASHING OUT THE BLADDER. 215 urethra, it consists of a straight conical metallic tube forthe urethra, and for the bladder one which is somewhatcurved like a vesical sound: there is also an eye-piece, an illu-minating apparatus, and an arrangement of mirrors by whicha strong light can be thrown upon whatever touches the endof the tube (Fig. 144). By the use of this instrument theurethra and inner surface of the bladder can be examinedby the eye. A view of the urethra may also be obtained by the use ofthe urethroscope, which consists of a straight, hard rubbertube provided with a rounded obturator which projects some-what beyond the end of the tube. The instrument is intro-duced into the urethra until the bladder is reached, when it isslightly withdrawn and the obturator is removed and a stronglight is thrown into the tube from a head mirror or from anelectric lamp, and as the tube is withdrawn various portionsof the urethra are exposed to the view of the surgeo
