Leopold Kroll, rector of thebeautiful St. Marks Church at HoosickFalls. He told he was willing to under-take missionary service. I told himsomething about the Island of Mauiwhere I would like to send him, but Iexplained that it was a very hard place,the hardest I had, where there were onlya very few white people. He said: Iamnot looking for an easy place. If it ishard, I feel that I should like to go.When I told him of the hundreds of chil-dren whose parents were heathen, butwho were willing that their childrenshould be taught about Christ, he said:I will go if you will take me. So he came. I was on the steamerw^hich took Mr. and Mrs. KroU andthree little boys to Lahaina. When wegot near the place where the Krolls wereto land, the older boys, aged four andfive, nicely dressed to go ashore, werestanding near the side of the vessel (107)

MR. AND MRS. KROLL AND SOME OF THE DAY-SCHOOL CHILDREN when a wave came over tlie side of thesteamer and dreniched them. They wentorying to their mother, -who laug*hed atthem and said: That little thing isnothing to cry about. Go and stand inthe sun and get dry. I thought thenthat she was the right kind of a womanfor a missionarys wife, and I was notmistaken. We anchor a half mile from the shoreand land in a small boat. The Ha-waiians, splendid boatmen, take usswiftly to the wharf, where we meet Mr.Kroll, who accompanies us to the littleinn. Mr. Kroll saw at once that to workamong these children he must have aparish house, so he set to work and theplantation people gave the lumber atcost and all the labor as a gift, so thatfor $1,100 he has a hall 60 feet by 40and a stage with a room on each side ofit.
