It is the mostnatural thing in the world for the newlycome immigrant to find his residence inthe quarter most thickly peopled withhis own race. No one who has not comein direct contact with them can formany idea of the strange and curious no-tions of American life prevailing in someof these foreign quarters. One mission-ary found a neighborhood of SouthItalian children firmly convinced thatProtestants worshiped a horse and ifone were to enter a Protestant churchhe would see the skeleton of a horsenailed to the wall for worship. A hundred thousand children a year,only six thousand of them Englishspeaking! Surely there is home mis-sionary work enough here and it is nota hopeless task. The oldest agent ofthe Italian Aid Society at Ellis Islandcame himself in the steerage some thirtyyears ago, a little chap of six and playedhis fiddle in the streets and slept coldof nights. There
