Title
Modern Russian Bale Seal
Description
English: An incomplete cast lead Russian bale seal dating from 1813. The seal measures 22.7mm by 19.4mm by 5.3mm and weighs 11.3g. John Sullivan of St Andrews University has supplied the following information about the seal:

The obverse (undated) side can be transcribed from the Cyrillic as follows: [L] D / [S] U' / yANOV / N 10

The reverse (dated) side appears to read as follows: [N] [P] / - - 12 [H] / 181.

(Much of this is speculative, with suggestions in square brackets.)

Its interpretation is as follows:

The Quality Control Officer was called Ul'yanov , with a forename initial S, which is found on two other seals: Malton Museum, Yorkshire (2206.15), dated 1814 and operating from Post 10; Kirkcaldy Museum, Fife (2006.337), dated 1805 and operating from what looks to be Post 7.
