He is now a retired resident ofSelling, Oklahoma. During the Civil war he wasa member of an Illinois regiment of infantry, oneyear. He is a republican and has long been activein the Methodist Church. James Carmony marriedPhoebe Ann Frakes, who was born in HamiltonCounty, Iowa, in 1852. The oldest of their chil-dren is R. N. Carmony, wife of D. B. Hearock. afarmer at Attica. Kansas; the second is Fred A.:.^rm!ttie is the wife of J. H. Smart, a farmer atSelling. Oklahoma; James R.. a farmer and stock-man, and William A., a merchant, arc both at Sell-ing. Fred A. Carmony was about two years old wdT-nhis parents moved out to the Kansas frontier. Heattended the public schools of Harner. Kansa-;.and finished the sophomore year of Harper Col-lege. HISTORY OF MONTANA ihony Normal School, completing his education atthe age of twenty-two. In the meantime he hadgone with his father to Oklahoma, and was afarmer in that territory and state near Seiling until 1906. In that year he became assistant cashierof the Cestos State Bank of Cestos, Oklahoma,and since then has followed banking as a regularcareer. In 1910 he organized the Citizens StateBank at Vici, Oklahoma, and served it as cashieruntil 1913. Mr. Carmony on coming to Montana boughtan interest in the Joliet State Bank, and servedas its vice president until January, 1913, since whichdate he has been president. The other officers areL. L. Seright, vice president, and E. L. Marvin,cashier. This was established as a state bank in 1907, and has a capital of $25,000 and surplus of$10,000. Air. Carmony also owns 160 acres of landin Dewey County, Oklahoma,, and has a modernhome at Joliet. His fellow citizens at Joliet have shown theirconfidence in his ability in several ways. For twoye
