Ross grew up on his fathers farm andattended school to the age of seventeen. He thenworked out a? a farm hand and in the fall of 1882came to the Northwest and had his first experienceworking in the great lumber woods and campsaround Tacoma, Washington. He also engaged incoal mining, and it was his interest in the coalmining industry that brought him across the coun-try to Great Falls in the autumn of 1886. He pros-pected for coal, worked in saw mills, and in 1896settled down to his permanent business in the flour,hay, seed, wood and coal business. His partnerwas Richard Graham, under the firm name of Gra-ham S: Ross, and the firm continued business forover twenty years, until Mr. Graham retired inDecember. 1917. She is also a native of Nova Scotia. Theyhave four children, Donald R., Helen, Hazel andJohn D., Jr. A. L Reeves. Any city, however large or small,has reason to be grateful for the presence of sucha citizen as A. L Reeves. Mr. Reeves has built upa large business in musical merchandise at Helena,though his relations with the community have manyinteresting aspects beyond that of a mere merchant.
