In what is now Oklahoma youngRandal! became an employe of the Comanche PoolCattle Company, and there learned the business ofriding the range and doing the other arduous workof a cowboy. From Oklahoma he crossed overinto the Texas Panhandle with a herd, and therebecame an employe of the Phillips Cattle Company,known as the LUBar outfit. This company hadestablished a Montana ranch in 1886, and in July,1889, Mr. Randall helped bring 4,500 head of cattleup from the Panhandle country to the Montana head-quarters. The cattle were shipped from .\marilloto Windover, Wyoming, and after being unloadedfrom the cars were driven overland a distance of700 or 800 miles to the LUBar ranch on the LittleDry, between the Yellowstone and Missouri rivers. In the spring of 1850 Mr. Randall came northto the Prairie Elk, joining the Home Land & Cat-tle Company, known as the Nbar N outfit. This ■me j In- i ing 1 ool I

HISTORY OF MONTANA was the largest cattle company in tlie state at thetime, handling about eighty thousand head throughthe year. The owners were the Niederinghousbrothers of St. Louis. Mr. Randall remained intheir service for seven years as a range man andpart of the time as commissary manager. Anotherperiod of seven years he was foreman for S. T.Cogswells outfit. This employment brought himinto the region of his present residence. The Cogs-well ranch was just across the Missouri River fromWolf Point. It was one of the smaller ranch con-cerns, with about 200 or 300 head of horses and5,000 head of sheep. The market during Mr. Ran-dalls management was Chicago and the shippingpoint Oswego. When he left Mr. Cogswell Mr. Randall took upa homestead south of the Missouri River, and incontrast to many of the early settlers not only occu-pied it during the period of proving up but has madeit a permanent home.
