han the proud-est column of marble. THE PAUPERS DEATH-BED, By Collins. Tread softly — bow the head —In reverent silence bow —No passing bell doth toll —Yet an immortal soulIs passing now. Stranger ! however great.Though laurels deck thy brow,There s one in that poor shed —One by that paltry bed —Greater than thou. Beneath that beggars roof,Lo ! death doth keep his state :Enter — no crowds attend —Enter — no guards defendThis palace gate. 236 MOUNT AUBURN. That pavement damp and coldNo smiling courtiers tread ;One silent woman standsLifting; with meao;re handsA dying head. No mino-lino; voices sound —An infant wail alone ;A sob suppressed — againThat short, deep gasp, and thenThe parting groan. Oh ! chano-e — Oh ! wondrous chano-e !Burst are the prison Ijars —This moment there, so low,So agonized, and nowBeyond the stars ! Oh ! change — stupendous change !There lies the soulless clod. The sun eternal breaks —The new immortal wakes —Wakes with his God. ^a-

EARLE. 238 MOUNT AUBURN. TREES IN MOUNT AUBURN. When trees are crowded closelytogether, they lose their lateral branches and all theircharacteristic beauty. One broad-spreading tree thatcovers a large space of ground is more serviceable forshade, and more beautiful and attractive in its appearance, than ten or twelve tall, slender trees occupying the samesjjace.
