But after awhileit got so that every time a Dog would meet aMonkey in the road, the Monkey would get up ina tree and laugh at him, and then the Dog wouldstop and scratch up the dirt with all four of hisfeet and growl. Oh, I ve seen them do that way, saidSweetest Susan, laughing. Yes, replied Mr. Rabbit, with a more solemnair than ever. They have never got out of thehabit of that kind of caper from that day to this.Well, the coolness grew into a dispute, and thedispute into a quarrel, and so there it was. TheMonkeys would make faces and squeal at theDogs, and the Dogs would show their teeth andgrowl at the Monkeys. It went from bad toworse, and after awhile, the Dogs would chasethe Monkeys wherever they saw them, and theMonkeys would swing down from the hanginglimbs and give the tails of the Dogs some terribletwists.
