Title
NCL-561807: Early Medieval buckle plate
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy buckle plate, probably of Anglo-Saxon date, c. 450-700.

The buckle plate consists of two thin sheets of copper alloy riveted together. Originally, it may have consisted of a single sheet of copper-alloy folded over then riveted to form a rectangular plate, but damage has removed any trace of folding and one rivet. The rivets are made of copper-alloy and have sub-square or lozenge-shaped heads. The sheet is thinner than most Medieval buckle plates, and the inconsistency of the quality and placement of the rivets is more suggestive of an Early Medieval date.
