Title |
NCL-B707A4: A cast copper-alloy open-work buckle plate of later Early Medieval date. |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper-alloy openwork buckle plate of 9th-11th century date.
The buckle consists of a single decorated plate, with hinge loops, which are now broken, integrally cast. The outer face of the buckle is highly decorated. It is of a zoomorphic or floral design but wear has made it unclear. Around the edge of the openwork section is a linear pattern of dots. There is one rivet still remaining and there is at least one other hole which could have contained a rivet. The object is perhaps not truly a buckle, but one half of a decorated, hinged plate that formed part of a belt. This object was found by divers in the River Tyne downstream from the Roman bridge at Corbridge. |
