Itwinters from JVIiddle States southward to northern SouthAmerica. River bottoms and tamarack swamps are resortedto immediately upon their arrival from the South in April.The birds travel great distances to fish, usually singly.Unlike the bitterns, herons do not stand motionless waitingfor their prey to come within reach, but move about in shal-low water, striking with their bill any form of animal lifethat appears near the surface. Their notes are coarse, discordant croaks. This speciesis not suffering destruction at the hands of the plumehunter, so are still found in great numbers along the riverbottoms of the Kankakee and the Illinois.
