ls theexperience of his hunting companion, who flushed a grouseand before the sportsman could shoot a goshawk struck thegrouse in midair, descending with it to the ground one hun-dred yards ahead of the hunter. Before the sportsmancould kill the hawk it had torn the flesh from half thebreast. Goshawks frequently visit the barnyards to raid thedovecotes and poultry yards. On a Xew England farm agoshawk attacked a flock of chickens, which rushed throughthe rear door of the farmhouse into the kitchen, followed bythe hawk. It attacked one of the hens, when the farmerfelled the bird with his walking stick. This bird, like theaccipiters, should be shot at sight. The goshawk nests usually in coniferous trees, placingtheir nests of sticks, twigs, and weeds, lined with bark andmoss, well towards the top of a hemlock or pine. Two orthree pale bluish-white eggs are laid. Of 28 stomachs examined, 9 contained poultry or gamebirds; 2, other birds; 10, mammals; 3, insects, and 8 wereempty. (Fisher.)

RED-TAILED HAWK. BIRDS OF PREY RED-TAILED HAWK The Red-tailed Hawk inhabits the entire Xorth Amer-ican continent, but ornithologists have divided the speciesinto several forms. The Pacific Coast representative iscalled the western red-tailed, while the bird inhabiting thegreat plains, northward into Canada, is known as Kridershawk. In eastern Xorth America the red-tailed is one of ourbest-known raptors. In many sections of the middle UnitedStates it is resident the year around, not being averse tocold weather if food is plentiful. The broad-square tail, with upper tail coverts a brightrufous, may be seen when the birds are soaring far abovethe treetops. Like the broad-winged hawk, the red-tailscall note is a whistle, though the birds are not noisy, likethe red-shouldered hawk. He is the largest of the commonhawks and one of the most beneficial, deserving full protec-tion, as he preys upon rats, squirrels, and other smallrodents and reptiles.
