escendant of the founder ofthe family, was born in Fyvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, in 1838. jHe was educated in Aberdeen, but paid more attention to ath-letics to outdoor sports, and to practical study of animal life andnature than to text-books. At the age of nineteen years he cameto America, and entered the University of Michigan. There hisearly bent for medical studies was gratified, and he continuedthose studies at the Long Island College, Brooklyn, New York,where he was graduated M. D. in 1863. He was at once appointedassistant to Dr. Austin Flint, professor of the institutes andpractice of medicine and clinical medicine. But the Civil Warwas then at its height, and the blood of the first Skene was hotwithin the young doctor. He joined the Union Army and wentto the front. There he served as a surgeon, and at the end ofthe war came back to the Long Island College and became anadjunct professor in that institution, with which he has since,until 1899, been constantly identified. 314

I ALEXANDER J. C. SKENE 315 Dr. Skene was for many years the dean of the Long IslandCollege, and also professor of gynecology, in which latterbranch of medicine and surgery he is, by general consent, one ofthe worlds greatest authorities. His voluminous Treatise onthe Diseases of Woman has become a standard work on thatsubject in America and Europe, and has no superior in the Eng-lish language. He has also written much for the best medicaljournals and reviews, and sometimes for the leading newspapers.He has served as president of the New York Obstetrical Society,the American Gynecological Society, and for the Medical Soci-ety of Kings County. Dr. Skene has long had a large private practice, and has beenesteemed as a consulting physician above most of his contempo-raries. He is famed for his skill as an operating surgeon, andhas been the hero of many marvelous performances.
